After 6 years working abroad, I came home to surprise my mom in the $600K house I bought her. My brother’s wife answered the door: “The maid is out back.” The maid was my mom

Earns her keep. In the house her daughter bought her.

Derek loudly pivoted the conversation, waving his fork aggressively as he detailed his grand architectural plans for the property. A composite deck. A massive fire pit. “And down the line,” he boasted, chewing loudly, “we fix it up and flip it. Sell it and get some acreage out in the county.”

He was casually discussing liquidating a six-hundred-thousand-dollar asset that he did not own.

I stood up, kissed my mother’s crown, and announced I needed to visit the bank to exchange foreign currency. As I cleared my plate, I smoothly palmed a stack of opened mail resting on the kitchen island.

The top envelope was a department store credit card statement bearing my mother’s name. The balance was $3,900. The itemized charges were a grotesque display of gluttony: expensive day spas, a high-end boutique, and two massive restaurant tabs. The signature on the receipt scans was a clumsy, fraudulent forgery of my mother’s cursive.
