After 6 years working abroad, I came home to surprise my mom in the $600K house I bought her. My brother’s wife answered the door: “The maid is out back.” The maid was my mom

“Derek?” Melissa asked, her voice shrill. “What does it say?”

The thick paper rattled violently in his shaking hands.

“Iris. Marie. Holloway,” Derek choked out, the words tearing up his throat.

Someone’s fork clattered loudly onto a china plate.

I did not raise my voice. “Paper One,” I said calmly. “The Deed. I purchased this property two years ago. $210,000 cash down. The mortgage is solely in my name, auto-paid from Abu Dhabi. You have been squatting in your little sister’s house since the day you hauled your boxes in.”

Melissa’s mouth hung open in silent horror. I didn’t pause.

“Paper Two.” I slid the next document forward. “As of 4:00 p.m. today, this property is locked inside a life estate trust. My mother holds the absolute, irrevocable legal right to inhabit this house until she takes her last breath. It cannot be sold, flipped, or inherited around her. There is no alternate timeline where this house ever becomes yours, Derek.”
