It is remarkable how quickly an ordinary morning can become something else entirely.
I opened the door.
At first, I did not understand what I was seeing.
Something enormous and gray was blocking my view of the road. It was so completely out of place that my mind struggled to make sense of it.
I blinked several times, wondering whether I was still half asleep.
Then I recognized it.
A concrete mixer truck was parked sideways across the only road leading from my property to the county highway.
It was the kind of heavy vehicle used for major construction projects, and it had been positioned with precision. The front of the truck was close to the steep embankment. The rear extended almost to the tree line.
There was no room for my pickup to pass.
There was no alternate driveway.
No second road.
No safe path around it.
I was trapped on my property.
