After My Wife Died, My Son Tried to Steal My Land—When I Refused, He Trapped Me Inside My Own Home

Michael was taken to the sheriff’s office.

I stood in my yard after everyone else had finished collecting statements and photographs. The morning had become quiet again, but it was not the same kind of quiet I had known before.

Harry walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Are you all right?”

I nodded, though I was not certain of the answer.

“I will be.”

“You did the right thing calling.”

“If you hadn’t answered—”

“But I did.”

He gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

“That’s what neighbors are for.”

I looked toward the empty road.

“Is there anything I can do?” Harry asked. “I can stay for a while. I can bring you lunch or help call Sarah.”

“I think I need a little time alone.”

He studied me, making sure I meant it.

“All right. But being alone and isolating yourself aren’t always the same thing. You call me if you need anything.”
