After My Wife Died, My Son Tried to Steal My Land—When I Refused, He Trapped Me Inside My Own Home

After the hearing, Michael was allowed to speak with me briefly.

A deputy escorted me into a small private room near the courtroom. Michael was already seated at a table when I entered.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

Not physically smaller, perhaps, but diminished. The ambition and certainty that had once filled the room around him had disappeared.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” he said.

His voice broke on the last word.

Tears began to run down his face.

“I’m so sorry. I don’t know how I let myself do this to you.”

I remained standing for a moment before taking the chair across from him.

“You planned it for months, Michael.”

“I know.”

“You tried to make me feel alone so I would give you my home.”

“I know.”

“You stood on the road your mother and I built and told me I couldn’t leave unless I signed away our land.”
