“I’ve handled difficult things before.”
“Handling something and healing from it are not always the same.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Over time, therapy helped me understand the events more clearly.
Michael’s behavior resulted from several factors: financial pressure, insecurity, entitlement, and a long-held belief that he had been competing with Sarah for my approval.
None of those things excused his actions.
Understanding why someone hurts you does not erase the harm.
But it can help you decide what healing should look like.
I also had to examine my own choices.
I did not cause Michael’s actions. He was responsible for the decisions he made.
Still, my isolation had created an opportunity.
By refusing help, avoiding neighbors, and withdrawing from family, I had allowed myself to become more vulnerable than I realized. Michael had observed my isolation and believed he could use it against me.
That realization was painful.
