## Remembering David Allan Coe
David Allan Coe did not live a conventional life.
He did not build his career by carefully following the rules.
He emerged from difficult beginnings, spent years in and out of correctional institutions, arrived in Nashville as an outsider, and eventually became one of the recognizable figures of the outlaw country movement.
He wrote songs that became hits for other artists.
He recorded songs that became staples of country music.
He created a stage persona that audiences never forgot.
And he built a mythology around himself that sometimes blurred the line between fact and legend.
For better or worse, he left an enormous impression.
At 86, David Allan Coe is gone.
But the music remains.
The stories remain.
The arguments about his legacy will remain.
And somewhere, someone will press play on “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” hear that unmistakable voice, and remember an artist who never seemed interested in being ordinary.
