Fourteen Thousand Dollars to Care for My Wife Stolen for a Florida Vacation

There was a brief pause on the line, the sound of paper rustling in his apartment.

“Is the baby okay?” Julian asked, his legal monotone dropping into genuine concern.

“Liam is fine,” I said. “He is in the pediatric ward for observation. But Julian, the money is gone.”

“What money?”

“The fourteen thousand I wired for Maya’s care,” I said. “And my shared credit card is being run up in Florida right now.”

I heard Julian’s voice shift back into his professional register, the slow, legal monotone he used when analyzing a contract.

“Who has access to that card besides you, David?”

“My mother,” I said, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “And Chloe has an authorized user card on that account.”

“I need you to pull up your business accounts on your laptop as soon as you can,” Julian said.

“My business accounts?” I asked, my brow furrowing. “This is my personal savings, Julian. Why would my business accounts matter?”
