Fourteen Thousand Dollars to Care for My Wife Stolen for a Florida Vacation

An article from a local Brooklyn community blog was open, titled “Local Mother Accuses Engineer Son of Elder Abuse and Medical Neglect.”

Beneath the headline was a photograph of my mother, Eleanor, looking frail and tearful on the sidewalk outside her brownstone.

The text quoted an anonymous family representative, who claimed that Maya had suffered a severe postpartum breakdown and was using her delusions to isolate the newborn from his grandmother.

“They are calling me a monster on the internet, David,” Maya said, her eyes fixed on the blank wall opposite her bed.

I rubbed my gold wedding ring, the metal cold against my skin as I tried to find words that would not sound hollow.

The article had already been shared dozens of times on the Park Slope neighborhood forum, with comments calling for my engineering license to be revoked.

“This is Mark’s doing,” I said, handing the phone back to her. “He is trying to force us to drop the criminal charges.”
