Fourteen Thousand Dollars to Care for My Wife Stolen for a Florida Vacation

“Mark had business to conduct in Florida,” my mother said, her chin rising even higher. “He is an entrepreneur with international connections.”

“Those connections were families he was scamming, Mother,” I said.

“He had a brilliant deal in Long Island,” she said, her voice tightening. “He told me himself.”

Julian reached into his cardboard folder and pulled out a stack of blue-backed legal documents, placing them next to the note.

“The international connections were a front, Eleanor,” Julian said, his legal monotone dropping like lead weights into the room.

Uncle Robert reached for the blue documents, his hand stopping an inch away.

“What are these?” Robert asked.

“Five separate criminal complaints for grand larceny and corporate forgery,” Julian said.

My mother finally shifted her gaze, her eyes darting to the blue papers.

“Mark’s business is perfectly legitimate,” she said, though her voice lacked its usual carrying power.

“Mark used David’s engineering credentials and corporate seal to sign construction subcontracts across three states,” Julian said.
