Fourteen Thousand Dollars to Care for My Wife Stolen for a Florida Vacation

Julian walked out of the administrator’s office at the end of the hall, his leather shoes clicking against the polished floor.

He carried his phone in his hand, the screen still glowing with a list of sent emails.

“The District Attorney’s office just sent the formal confirmation,” Julian said, his legal monotone as flat and deliberate as ever.

“They reviewed the digital logs Chloe brought. The timestamps prove the forgery templates were created on Mark’s laptop three weeks before your name was attached to the contracts.”

He stopped in front of me and slid the phone into his pocket.

“You are completely cleared, David,” Julian said.

“The state is dropping the investigation into your engineering license. The liability is entirely Mark’s.”

The relief did not feel like a victory.
