Daniel Ross had handled my business contracts for nearly a decade. He was also one of the few people I trusted to tell me when I was being foolish.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“David? It’s eight in the morning on New Year’s Day.”
“I need help.”
My voice must have told him the rest.
He stopped sounding sleepy.
“What happened?”
I stepped into the hallway and told him everything.
Not dramatically. Not angrily.
I gave him the facts: the empty apartment, the food, the note, Maya’s condition, Liam’s low temperature, the fourteen thousand dollars, and the charges in Miami.
Daniel was silent for several seconds.
“Have you spoken to your family?”
“No.”
“Good. Don’t yet.”
“I canceled the cards.”
“That was reasonable. Take screenshots of every transaction before anything changes. Download full statements. Save the note. Save all messages.”
