Maya gave a faint smile.
“Daniel would charge you for advice like that.”
“I charge by the hour,” Daniel said, closing his laptop.
The small joke eased the tension.
Then Daniel’s expression became serious again.
“There’s something else we need to discuss.”
David knew before he spoke.
“The possibility that Maya and I share a father.”
Maya’s hand went still.
Daniel nodded.
“There are tests. But you do not need to decide today.”
David looked at Maya.
She looked frightened, not because of the answer, but because of what the question might do to them.
Their marriage.
Their son.
Their memories.
Their future.
“We should test,” David said quietly.
Maya’s eyes filled.
“What if it’s true?”
“Then we face it.”
“What if everything changes?”
“Everything has already changed.”
She looked toward Liam.
David followed her gaze.
Their son slept peacefully, unaware of old documents, hidden photographs, or the choices of people he would never know.
