I came to my in-laws’ house for the first time when my mother-in-law rolled down the car window and coldly told me, “We don’t take strangers. You can walk there by yourself.”

“For thirty-three minutes while I walked through the rain, you didn’t call once. The moment your family lost a corporate contract, you called twenty-six times.”

She looked directly at him.

“That was when I understood exactly what I meant to you.”

Javier cried quietly.

“I really did love you.”

“Maybe in your own weak way. But I refuse to spend my life competing with your fear of your mother and your family’s obsession with my money.”

She stood.

“Sign the divorce papers, Javier.”

One month later, he did.

The bank’s investigation concluded, and through his attorneys, Javier admitted that he had used Sofia’s financial documents without her consent.

The loan was voided.

A legal settlement required him to pay thousands in legal expenses and permanently restricted his access to Sofia’s personal and business accounts.

Sofia recovered some of the advance payments for Mariana’s wedding through refunds and chargebacks.
