I married a man 30 years older for his fortune — a… 1

Permanent Chairperson:
Eleanor Brooks Hartley.

I blinked.

“There must be a mistake.”

“There isn’t.”

The lawyer smiled.

“You do not own the foundation.”

“You cannot sell it.”

“You cannot spend its money on yourself.”

“You cannot inherit it personally.”

I looked at him, confused.

“Then… what did Russell leave me?”

The lawyer answered without hesitation.

“A purpose.”

He pointed to another page.

“The foundation funds hospitals, scholarships, housing assistance, and emergency grants.”

“Your salary as chairperson is fixed.”

“It is generous enough that you’ll never struggle financially again.”

“But every other dollar must help someone else.”

Vanessa slammed both hands onto the desk.

“So she gets control over Father’s legacy?”

“No,” the lawyer corrected again.

“She gets responsibility.”

“There is a significant difference.”

Silence swallowed the room.

For the first time since Russell’s funeral, I finally understood what he had meant.

He hadn’t rewarded the woman who married him for money.
