Alvin immediately took high resolution photos of the document and sent them straight to Inez.
Her reply arrived ten minutes later:
Do not move the original box. Do not confront them yet. Act completely normal.
When Veronica returned early that afternoon, she caught Alvin stepping out of the back shed.
“What were you doing out there, Alvin?” she asked, her eyes narrowing with instant suspicion.
Carmen stepped out behind him carrying a basket of laundry. “He was just helping me carry the linen sheets, Veronica.”
Veronica offered a tight, forced smile. “How sweet.” But her eyes scanned the floorboards of the shed with sharp intensity.
The next morning at breakfast, Alvin announced he was heading back to New York early. “I’ve got too many board meetings to manage. I can’t stay.”
Veronica visibly relaxed, pouring herself more coffee.
Alvin added casually, “Honestly, it’s a relief knowing you two are taking care of the house and the bills. I’ve always been terrible with family estate stuff.”
