I learned about Preston Cole through Walter.
Estate law was apparently a small world, especially when forty million dollars might be involved.
Walter called me on a Tuesday evening while I was reviewing supply reports at my desk. His voice was measured, but I knew him well enough to hear the concern beneath it.
“Someone is asking questions about your grandfather’s trust,” he said. “Formal questions. The kind attorneys ask when they are preparing a claim.”
“Who?”
“A woman named Vanessa Brooks Parker. I believe she is your father’s wife.”
I held the phone against my ear and looked through the window at rows of nearly identical military housing beneath the North Carolina evening sky.
I thought about how quickly a wedding toast could become a legal strategy.
I was not angry, at least not yet.
Anger usually required surprise, and some part of me had expected trouble from the moment I saw Vanessa studying the guests during her own wedding vows.
