I did not hear the car arrive.
I heard the doorbell.
It cut through the quiet with a sharp, unfamiliar sound.
I wiped my hands on my jeans and walked around the side of the house, expecting a delivery driver or perhaps a neighbor.
Instead, I found Vanessa standing on my front porch.
She wore a cream-colored blazer, tailored trousers, and sunglasses pushed into her hair. Beside her stood a man in a gray suit, holding a leather folder against his chest.
Neither of them had called ahead.
Neither had been invited.
“Christine,” Vanessa said, stepping forward before I had fully opened the storm door. “We need to talk.”
I looked at the man beside her.
He introduced himself as Preston Cole and extended his hand.
I did not take it.
“We represent your father’s interests,” he said.
I noticed that he did not say my father had sent them.
