We sat down.
I did not offer coffee. I poured three glasses of water and allowed the silence to stretch slightly longer than was comfortable.
Preston opened his folder and cleared his throat.
“Colonel Parker, we have reason to believe you are concealing assets that rightfully belong, at least in part, to your father’s family estate. Specifically, we are referring to a trust established by your late grandfather. We believe the trust was intended to benefit the broader Parker family rather than a single individual.”
I placed my glass on a coaster, folded my hands in my lap, and looked directly at him.
“That is a serious allegation,” I said. “Do you have documentation supporting it?”
He hesitated.
It was brief, but it told me what I needed to know.
He had suspicion, rumor, and perhaps a theory.
He did not have proof.
“We are in the process of gathering the relevant material,” he said.
