My father reached out and pulled me into a hug.
It was brief and slightly stiff, the kind of embrace offered by a man unaccustomed to displaying so much emotion in public.
But it was real.
“I love you, Christine,” he said. “I should have said that more often this past year.”
“I love you too, Dad.”
I stepped back and looked at him.
“Let’s decide what comes next together this time.”
He nodded.
For the first time in months, something inside my chest loosened.
Nothing had been fully resolved. Nothing had been completely healed.
But we were finally facing the right direction.
Vanessa’s marriage to my father did not survive the year.
She filed for divorce three months after the ruling, before my father had completed the paperwork his own attorney was preparing.
I believe she understood that little remained to salvage once her financial motives had been exposed in open court.
