Detective Ruiz placed a tablet on the rolling tray beside me.
“Your husband has been removed from the hospital,” she said. “There is an officer outside this room. He cannot enter this unit.”
My fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket.
“Did he ask to see me?”
Ruiz paused.
“Yes.”
My stomach contracted.
Liam immediately stepped away from the window.
“You don’t have to hear this.”
“I asked.”
Ruiz looked at me carefully.
“He said you were confused from the fall.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course he did.
Even now, Ethan was polishing the lie.
“He also said,” Ruiz continued, “that your brother has always disliked him and is exploiting your condition to interfere in your marriage.”
Liam gave a humorless laugh.
“That’s creative.”
I opened my eyes.
“Not really.”
Both of them looked at me.
I swallowed past the ache in my throat.
“Ethan always uses the same story. If someone disagrees with him, they’re jealous. If they question him, they’re unstable. If they catch him lying, they’re obsessed with destroying him.”
