I pointed again.
“But this signature angles upward while the signature line remains perfectly horizontal.”
Ruiz nodded slowly.
“A digital copy.”
“Or a physical transfer.”
Evelyn stared at me.
“Arthur would be proud.”
My eyes filled before I could stop them.
I looked away.
“No.”
The word surprised even me.
Evelyn frowned.
“No?”
“I spent nine years thinking he gave me a company because he believed in my financial skills.”
“He did believe in you.”
“But he also left me a key to two billion dollars without explaining what the door opened.”
My voice shook.
Liam reached toward me, then remembered his promise.
He waited.
I looked at him.
He gently placed his hand over mine.
“I am tired,” I whispered, “of men who love me deciding which truths I can handle.”
Liam lowered his head.
Evelyn’s eyes closed.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Then Evelyn said, “You’re right.”
