My husband beat me until I lost consciousness, then calmly told everyone at the hospital I had “slipped in the shower.” – usnews

Not because he wanted me silent.

Because he wanted me careful.

I looked at Ruiz.

“Can Ethan hear anything I’m saying?”

“No.”

“Can he leave?”

“Right now, officers are speaking with him. I won’t discuss investigative steps until we’ve established the circumstances. But you are not required to see him.”

I swallowed.

“He’ll tell you I’m unstable.”

Ruiz waited.

“He’ll say I’ve been under stress. That I drink.”

“Do you?”

“Sometimes. A glass of wine. Not tonight.”

“All right.”

“He’ll say I get confused.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

My answer was too fast.

Ruiz’s expression didn’t change.

I took a breath.

“I started seeing a therapist four months ago. Secretly. I had panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep. Ethan knows I saw a doctor once about anxiety. He’ll use that.”

“Anxiety does not make a person responsible for someone else’s injuries.”
