The room became so quiet I could hear Cecelia breathing against me.

Then Mark continued.

“Mom, if you’re hearing this, you’re probably angry. You loved me before anyone else did.”

Violet’s shoulders began to shake.

“But loving me doesn’t mean you get to decide which choices were really mine.”

Nobody moved.

“Don’t make Sally prove she loved me by agreeing with you.”

Violet covered her mouth.

“And please don’t put Cecelia in the middle.”

I looked down at my daughter.

Mark’s voice continued.

“She isn’t something I left behind. She’s our daughter. Sally’s and mine. And she deserves to become her own person.”

“Turn it off,” Violet whispered.

I did.

The screen went dark.

Then I looked at her.

“I want Cecelia to know her grandmother.”

Violet began crying.

“But you cannot tell her that I forced her father into this. You cannot teach her that he was too weak to understand what he wanted.”
