My Husband Became an Organ Donor – His Doctor Stopped Me in the Hospital Hallway and Said, ‘There’s Something He Made Me Promise Not to

“Mark.”

His thumb moved slowly across my stomach.

“If I’m not going to get the time I wanted with her, maybe someone else can get more time with their family.”

I looked away.

“Don’t make this sound beautiful.”

He said nothing.

“I’m already angry enough,” I whispered.

His eyes found mine.

“I’m scared too, Sal.”

That nearly broke me.

Mark had always been the one who made impossible things sound manageable.

There was always a joke. A plan. A hand on my back.

Hearing him admit he was afraid made the truth feel more real than any diagnosis had.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to do this without you.”

“You don’t have to know yet.”

“And what if I never figure it out?”

He thought for a moment.

“Then you’ll make it up as you go.”

I gave him a miserable look.
