My husband drove the car into the river with my brother and me trapped inside, but when the water had already reached my neck, the man who had been “paralyzed” for 15 years stood up from his wheelchair, k:ick:ed the door open, and whispered, “Play d:ea:d. He’s watching.” I didn’t ask any questions… until I saw who was waiting for my husband on the shore.

“Mrs. Vale.”

I flinched at the name.

She noticed.

“Rosalind is fine.”

“Rosalind.”

She placed a recorder on the table.

“I need your complete account.”

I gave it.

The road.

The crash.

The wire.

Garrett leaving.

Penelope waiting.

Tobias standing.

The escape.

The milk.

Everything.

When I finished, Agent Brooks did not offer comfort.

I appreciated that.

She said, “You cannot contact anyone.”

“My employees?”

“No.”

“My friends?”

“No.”

“My attorney?”

“We’ll coordinate.”

“How long?”

“Until we secure enough evidence.”

I hated it.

But I agreed.

The plan developed over the next week.

Investigators would allow Garrett and Penelope to believe we were dead.

Estate activity would be monitored.

Financial transfers would be tracked.

Victor’s communications would be intercepted where legally authorized.

The shipyard vote remained delayed.

Then something unexpected happened.

Garrett announced a memorial.

For Tobias and me.

At Mercer Marine.

He planned to speak.

Penelope planned to attend.
