My attorney called first.
“Laura, the results are in.”
My hands started trembling.
“And?”
There was a pause.
“The probability that Diego is the biological father is greater than 99.99%.”
I closed my eyes.
I had known.
Somewhere inside, I had always known.
But hearing it officially still brought tears to my eyes.
Not because I wanted Diego back.
Because my children would never have to wonder whether their father had wanted them.
I asked my attorney to send the report.
Then I called Diego.
“Your results are in.”
He didn’t speak for several seconds.
Finally:
“They’re mine.”
“Yes.”
“I’m their father.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“Laura, I’m sorry.”
I looked out the window.
“I know.”
“I made the biggest mistake of my life.”
I closed my eyes.
“No, Diego.”
He went quiet.
“The biggest mistake wasn’t believing the vasectomy had worked.”
