Two healthy little girls.
I named them Sofia and Elena.
When Diego first held them, he cried.
Real tears.
He looked completely overwhelmed.
“I don’t deserve them.”
I stood beside the hospital bed.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“You don’t deserve what happened to you,” I said.
“But you can still choose what kind of father you become.”
He nodded.
“I want to try.”
I believed him enough to let him prove it.
Not for me.
For the girls.
Our marriage, however, was over.
There are some wounds that apologies cannot erase.
Trust is one of them.
Months later, the divorce was finalized.
I kept my home.
The girls had financial protections established for their future.
And Diego became a father who had to earn his place in their lives one day at a time.
As for me?
I learned something I wish I had understood years earlier.
