I had covered rent for his relatives.
I had bought expensive gifts for members of his family.
Yet my mother living with us for three months was supposedly an unreasonable financial demand.
Claire looked directly at Brandon.
“Mr. Miller, did Mrs. Miller ever secretly transfer hundreds of thousands of dollars to members of her family?”
He clenched his jaw.
“No.”
“Did she ever forge your signature to obtain unauthorized loans?”
He looked down at the table.
“No.”
“Then explain exactly what money you believed you needed to protect from your wife.”
Brandon remained silent.
He couldn’t produce a coherent answer.
The truth was obvious to everyone sitting in that room.
He wasn’t protecting our money from my mother.
He was protecting money from me.
Because he had never really viewed me as an equal partner.
I was a financial resource he could draw from whenever he wanted to build the life he imagined for himself and his relatives.
