He described his shame at remaining hidden while I entered the Holloway family.
Grant’s attorney asked:
“You knew your daughter’s mother-in-law participated in the conspiracy?”
“I suspected.”
“Yet you allowed Seraphina to remain married.”
“My daughter was an adult.”
“You could have warned her.”
“I did.”
I turned toward him.
That was not entirely true.
He warned me Grant was contemptuous.
He never told me Mavis might have known about the crash until investigators had sufficient evidence.
Grant’s attorney noticed my expression.
“You withheld information from your own daughter.”
“Yes,” Julian said.
“Why?”
“Federal investigators believed disclosure could compromise the case.”
“So the Bellamy family sacrifices honesty whenever power requires it.”
My father took a breath.
“That is one of the failures my daughter intends to end.”
The answer did not make him innocent.
It made him credible.
Mavis’s trial was joined with Grant’s during the conspiracy phase.
