MY HUSBAND TOOK HIS MISTRESS TO THE GALA AND LEFT ME WASHING DISHES

For nearly a decade, I had appeared at formal board sessions through secure video or behind closed doors.

Public statements came through our chief counsel.

Photographs were prohibited.

Business magazines called me the Invisible Bellamy.

Grant had spent months attempting to arrange a meeting.

He wanted Bellamy Holdings to guarantee a new marina development in the Bahamas.

The project was already eighty million dollars over budget.

He believed the gala would be his opportunity to charm the mysterious chairwoman into saving him again.

From the upper landing, I saw him below.

Delaney stood beside him wearing my grandmother’s diamond necklace.

Grant had told me it was being cleaned.

His hand rested against Delaney’s lower back while she laughed at something a state senator had said.

Mavis stood nearby, introducing Delaney as “the woman who truly understands Grant’s world.”

Then the master of ceremonies approached the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we are honored to welcome the chairwoman of Bellamy Holdings.”
