My scalp had begun to heal. The cuts were faint now, thin lines under new stubble. I looked in the mirror and did not see beauty or ugliness. I saw evidence that I was still standing.
At the ceremony, the auditorium was full.
Officers. Enlisted leaders. Civilians. Partner agencies. A few journalists invited for routine public affairs coverage because a command transition is ordinary news.
Except Ryan had tried to make me ordinary scandal.
By then his posts had spread further. Not viral, but visible enough. He had added more accusations: instability, cruelty, abandonment, lies about me abusing authority. Linda had appeared in a shaky video saying she feared for her son’s safety. She wore pearls and a trembling voice. She called me “power-hungry.” She called herself “a mother trying to save her family.”
Then my legal team released nothing.
Not yet.
Silence made them louder.
That was useful too.
