The auditorium became completely still.
I continued.
“I stand before you today as your commander. Not because life paused long enough to let me arrive untouched, but because duty matters even when life arrives with teeth. This unit will be disciplined. It will be precise. It will be humane. We will protect our mission, and we will protect each other from any abuse of power, whether it comes from outside these gates or within them.”
I paused.
Major Desai sat in the front row, eyes bright.
“I ask for your honesty,” I said. “You will have mine. I ask for your courage. You will have mine. I ask that you remember something simple: no one earns the right to control another person by calling it love.”
A sound moved through the room.
Not applause yet.
Breath.
Recognition.
Then someone stood.
A command sergeant major in the second row.
Then another.
