Morales placed a map on the table.
A rural county in western Pennsylvania. Small roads. Old mining towns. Mountains folded like secrets.
“Diane says Linda maintained a property there under another name. A cabin. She heard arguments about it years ago. She thought it was connected to insurance fraud. Now she believes it may have been used as a hiding place.”
“A hiding place for Alina?”
“Or a place Alina ran to.”
That distinction mattered.
People do not always disappear because someone takes them.
Sometimes they vanish because survival requires becoming unfindable.
“Why tell us now?” I asked.
Morales gave me a sad smile. “She said she heard you say no one earns control by calling it love. She said she wished someone had said it before she lost everything.”
I turned away for a moment.
Not to cry.
To make room for the fact that pain can travel through strangers and become a rope.
