I had expected something larger. Thunder, perhaps. A dramatic confrontation. Ryan shouting. Linda fainting. A judge slamming a gavel so hard the past cracked open.
Instead, freedom arrived in a beige courtroom with humming lights and a clerk who mispronounced my middle name.
Ryan appeared by video from a holding facility because new charges had complicated his release. He looked thinner. His beard had grown in unevenly. Without Linda beside him, he seemed unfinished, as if someone had removed the script and left only the actor.
The judge reviewed the identity findings, the fraudulent documents used in the marriage license, and the ongoing criminal proceedings. Sarah spoke briefly. Ryan’s attorney objected weakly, more out of obligation than hope.
Then the judge declared the marriage voidable due to fraud and granted the annulment.
Just like that.
Years of compromise, dinners, holidays, arguments, apologies, tax returns, mortgage payments, shared passwords, and photographs vanished from the law’s definition of marriage.
