Not all. Courts rarely give perfect endings. But enough.
Linda stood as the verdict was read, gripping the table. For the first time since I had met her, she looked old. Not fragile. Not innocent. Just old, like a house whose paint had finally peeled enough to reveal rot.
Ryan had already sealed his fate with his plea. Linda’s sentencing would come later. Restitution would be complicated. Appeals would follow. Legal endings are rarely clean.

Outside the courthouse, Alina approached me.
“I got something yesterday,” she said.
“What?”

“That’s good.”
She laughed once, tearfully. “Good. Terrifying. Impossible. All of it.”
Diane joined us, leaning on a cane. Jenna stood beside her. Three women Ryan and Linda had counted as finished.
Diane looked at my uniform. “You know what I regret most?”
