Status.

Appearances.
I walked through the double doors.
The soft metallic rhythm of my prosthetic sounded against the marble.
I saw my mother first.
She stood holding champagne, surrounded by women dressed in couture.
Her smile froze when she saw me.
Dad turned.
Then Chloe.
All three moved toward me.
“What are you doing here?” my father hissed.
“Business.”
Chloe laughed nervously.
“Security is going to throw you out.”
Mom grabbed my arm.
“Do not ruin this for your sister.”
I looked down at her hand.
She released me.
“I’m not here to ruin anything.”
Dad sneered.
“You don’t belong in a room like this.”
A deep voice answered behind him.
“She absolutely does.”
Arthur Montalvo approached with his legal counsel.
He walked directly past my parents and shook my hand.
“Valerie. Excellent to see you.”
Then, loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear:
“I’ve been telling my board about our joint development project all evening.”
