Gray hair.
Soft voice.
He had represented Margaret for twenty-eight years.
The first thing he did was ask Ethan to leave the room.
Ethan looked offended.
I did too.
Gideon explained:
“Margaret was extremely clear that I speak with Nora privately first.”
Ethan looked at me.
I nodded.
He went downstairs for coffee.
Gideon opened a file.
“What I’m about to tell you may upset the Bennett family.”
“I assumed that the moment I found your card in a pillow.”
He smiled slightly.
Then became serious.
“Margaret retained a parcel of land after the farm sale.”
I stared.
“How much?”
“Approximately thirty-six acres.”
“Where?”
“West of Willow Creek.”
“Near the new commerce road.”
I knew the area.
Ten years earlier, it had been fields.
Now warehouses, clinics, and distribution buildings were appearing along the corridor.
I felt cold.
“Why did no one know?”
“Samuel never owned it.”
“Margaret did.”
