“What does that mean?”

“You took care of Mom for twelve years.”

“And suddenly she leaves you everything valuable.”

“That doesn’t look suspicious?”

“Yes.”

That answer surprised her.

“It looks suspicious.”

“That’s why your mother documented it.”

Gideon placed copies of the competency records on the table.

Daniel barely looked.

“She was ninety.”

“She was eighty-seven when she executed the trust.”

“She was already declining.”

“Physically.”

“Not cognitively.”

Marcus finally spoke.

“What did she say about us?”

Gideon paused.

“Margaret did not describe this as punishment.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

“She said each of you had already received assistance during her lifetime.”

Daniel had received money to start his construction business.

Marcus had been helped with the down payment on his first tire shop.

Leah had received help during a divorce.

Ethan had been given Samuel’s old equipment years earlier, which he later sold to help fund our first house.
