Because I could hear how ashamed my son was.

“Grant, you didn’t do this.”

“I let it happen.”

His eyes were wet.

I had rarely seen him cry as an adult.

Vanessa touched his shoulder.

“Can we please stop this?”

He pulled away again.

“No. That’s the problem.”

She stared at him.

“What problem?”

Her face hardened.

Grant’s voice grew steadier.

“You decide where we go. You decide which plans change. You decide who gets invited. You decide what I say when people ask questions.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You changed our honeymoon without asking me.”

“We discussed it.”

“You told me after you booked it.”

She crossed her arms.

“Because you never make decisions.”

Grant nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

That seemed to surprise her.

He looked down at the table.

“I don’t make decisions because every time I disagree with you, you make me feel like I’m stupid.”
