There was.
Unfortunately, it only made things worse.
I found Vanessa before the ceremony.
She was surrounded by people, but I waited until I could get close enough to speak quietly.
“You told me no one was supposed to wear blue.”
She shifted uncomfortably.
“Not exactly.”
I stared at her.
“Then why did you tell ME not to?”
Before she could answer, her mother stepped closer.
“Blue is for family.”
For a moment, I could only look at her.
“I’m the groom’s mother.”
She gave me a tight little smile.
Not an apologetic smile.
Not even an embarrassed one.
A tight smile.
I turned to my son.
“Grant?”
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Mom. Please. Not now.”
That hurt more than anything Vanessa or her mother had said.
Fine.
I wasn’t going to start a fight on my son’s wedding day.
I moved away, smiled when people spoke to me, and tried to convince myself that it was just wedding nonsense.
