Part 1: Thanksgiving at the Vale House

Then Mrs. Mercer sent a photograph.

A huge banner stretched across my parents’ front porch:

Gala of Gratitude: Honoring Serena Vale, the Daughter Who Saved Our Family Home.

I read it twice.

My mother had not stopped pretending. She had decided to crown Serena in public, using foreclosure as a stage for sympathy, money, and admiration.

Mrs. Mercer wrote one line beneath the photo:

Don’t let someone else wear your medals, Clara.

The next day, the universe handed me the weapon.

Her name was Nora Reyes.

She was twenty-four, worked events at the country club, and called me from a hallway where carts rolled and microphones were being tested.

“Commander Vale?” she whispered. “I know this is strange, but I’m building the slideshow for your family’s gala.”

My spine went still.

“Your mother gave me bank records to scan. She said they proved your sister saved the house.”
