Part 1: Thanksgiving at the Vale House

Don’t mention this to Serena.

The ballroom inhaled as one body.

Part 7: The Lie Ends in Public
My boots sounded impossibly loud against the polished floor.

No one stopped me.

The crowd parted because people recognize a detonation after the fuse has already burned out.

Serena stood frozen beneath the red glow of the screen. The data washed over her face, her satin dress, and the diamonds at her ears. Ten minutes earlier, she had looked untouchable.

Now she looked like someone caught standing inside another woman’s life.

My father leaned toward the microphone.

“There has been a misunderstanding.”

The feedback squealed.

I stopped in front of the stage and looked up at him.

“No. There has been a three-year lie.”

The room went silent again, but this time the silence belonged to me.

I turned so the guests could hear.
