Emily remained careful.

Not cruel.

Careful.

Sometimes during video calls, he caught glimpses of the place where she was staying. A pale blue wall. A window overlooking trees. A woman’s voice in the background humming old lullabies.

One afternoon, he heard a man laugh softly offscreen.

Mark’s chest tightened.

“Who’s there?” he asked before he could stop himself.

Emily’s expression cooled.

“My cousin Daniel. He brought groceries.”

“Oh.”

Jealousy rose fast and useless.

He swallowed it.

“Tell him thank you.”

Emily looked surprised.

Then nodded.

“I will.”

It was a small victory, invisible to anyone else.

But Mark felt it.

He was learning not to grab at things simply because he feared losing them.

On the sixth week after the birth, Emily agreed to meet him in person.

Not at the house.

Not with the babies.

At a quiet public garden halfway between the city and wherever she had been staying.
