A fragile warmth opened inside him.

“She does?”

“Yes.”

He looked down at his hands.

“I don’t know how to apologize in a way that doesn’t sound too small.”

“Maybe it is too small.”

He nodded.

“Maybe.”

Emily turned toward him then.

“I don’t need a speech, Mark. I need to know whether you understand that I wasn’t just scared that day. I was alone in a way I can’t forget.”

His eyes burned.

“I understand more now.”

“More isn’t all.”

“No,” he said. “It isn’t.”

She studied him.

“I knew about Madison’s email.”

“I found it.”

“I thought you might.”

“I’m sorry.”

Emily smiled faintly, but it did not reach her eyes.

“I used to think if I could just explain my pain clearly enough, you would care. Then I realized you understood. You just believed I would stay anyway.”
