When I finished, I washed my face.
I dried my eyes.
Then I walked back into the bedroom.
Nathan looked at me.
His expression changed.
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Margaret looked almost disappointed.
“There,” I said.
“What?” Nathan asked.
“You don’t have anything left to take.”
Margaret frowned.
I walked past them.
Neither of them followed me.
I went downstairs.
The house was dark.
The kitchen smelled faintly of yesterday’s dinner.
I sat at the table.
My hands were still shaking.
I opened my laptop.
Then I opened my bank account.
And that was when the entire story changed.
Because for the first time in three years, I stopped looking at my finances as a wife.
I looked at them as a businesswoman.
I opened my monthly statements.
Mortgage.
Utilities.
Car payment.
Insurance.
Groceries.
Phone.
Internet.
Medical expenses.
Credit cards.
Everything.
I started adding the numbers.
