And suddenly the last eighteen months made sense.
The late-night “work meetings.”
The excuses.
The cash withdrawals.
The constant requests for money.
The sudden emergencies.
He hadn’t been supporting the household.
He had been trying to keep a collapsing financial life hidden from me.
But there was still one question.
“Why Rachel?”
He looked at her.
Rachel lowered her head.
I asked her directly.
“What did Nathan tell you?”
She took a breath.
“He told me he was investing in a business.”
I frowned.
“What business?”
“I don’t know.”
Nathan immediately interrupted.
“Rachel—”
“No.”
She stood.
“I deserve to know too.”
She looked at me.
“He told me he had money tied up in a private investment. He said once it paid out, he would have enough to settle everything.”
My stomach tightened.
“Everything?”
She nodded.
“The debts. The apartment. The divorce.”
I looked at Nathan.
“You promised her a divorce.”
