“The apartment was $1,850 a month.”
“For almost a year.”
“Yes.”
“Plus the deposit?”
“Yes.”
“Furniture?”
“Yes.”
“Utilities?”
“Yes.”
I calculated quickly.
“You spent more than twenty thousand on that apartment.”
He nodded.
“And the rest?”
“Debt payments.”
I leaned back.
“So you didn’t spend thirty thousand on Rachel.”
“No.”
“You spent money trying to maintain two lives while hiding that you didn’t have a job.”
He didn’t respond.
I looked at Margaret.
“And you knew.”
She whispered:
“I was trying to help him.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You were helping him hide.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
Nathan finally looked at me.
“I was going to fix it.”
I stared at him.
“With what?”
He had no answer.
And that was when I realized something.
He hadn’t had a plan.
He had only had another payment.
Another transfer.
Another lie.
Another month.
And somehow, I had been paying for every one of them.
