He looked at me.
“I am not quitting.”
His face fell.
“I know.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t understand.”
I picked up my phone.
“I am not just keeping my job.”
I opened the email from my boss.
The promotion letter was still there.
I turned the screen toward Nathan.
“My promotion becomes official Monday.”
He stared at it.
His expression changed.
Because for the first time, he understood what that meant.
The income he had been counting on…
was going to increase.
But so was my independence.
And I was no longer planning to use that money to rescue him.
Then another notification appeared.
This one wasn’t from my bank.
It was from my credit-monitoring service.
I opened it.
There had been a recent inquiry into my credit.
I frowned.
I hadn’t applied for anything.
I looked at Nathan.
“Did you apply for another loan?”
