I started reviewing the credit application.
There was a phone number attached to it.
I didn’t recognize the number.
But the application had been submitted from an address I did recognize.
Nathan’s old apartment.
I stared at the screen.
Rachel had lived there.
But the application had been submitted three days before she arrived at our house.
I called Rachel.
She answered after several rings.
“Sofia?”
“I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Did Nathan ever use your apartment to handle his finances?”
There was a long silence.
Then Rachel said:
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“How?”
“He used to receive mail there.”
“What kind of mail?”
“Bank letters.”
“Anything else?”
She hesitated.
“Debt collection letters.”
I closed my eyes.
“Rachel, did you ever see my name on any of them?”
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did you see?”
“I saw your name on an envelope.”
